Fall at Witt

Last week I wrote about the impending championships for Wittenberg athletics.  Volleyball, Soccer, and Football all secured NCAC championships.  I am enclosing a picture of my friends and I at the Earlham Wittenberg Women’s Soccer game.  I have alot of friends on that team and my buddies and I thought it would be funny to go in costume to support the team and be loud.  Take a look:

Needless to say, our costumes were sufficient to secure us the victory.  In four years at Wittenberg, the Women’s Soccer team has won the NCAC Championship every year.

Aside from sports.  I am running a 10k tommorow for lacrosse to raise money for Susan G. Komen for a cure foundation, and therefore I don’t have 6am weight lifting.  I’m not sure what I am more excited about, running 6.2 miles or not waking up at 5:30am.  Tough call.

Thanksgiving break is next week, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 came out and I have completely neglected my school work to play it with my friends.  It’s ok though because I have had a really slow academic week.

Saturday the Football team plays in the playoffs and Student Senate is hosting free t-shirts for the first 150 fans.  That will be followed by the OSU-Michigan game and although I root for neither team, the game is a big deal down here and a great excuse for friends to get together.

Tune in next week to hear about my birthday adventures back home in Chicago.

Everything is great at Wittenberg.  This weekend Wittenberg will be appearing on Extreme Makeover Home Edition.  The people that got “made-over” live just up the road, and in addition to the remodeling, the three kids got full tuition paid to attend Wittenberg in the future.  I heard they are of very young ages, so this won’t be happening anytime soon.

This week I submitted my law school applications as well as going to the University Career Center.  The career center is a great resource here on campus, and they help you with resumes, interviews, as well as casual networking, while helping to find areas of interest for jobs.  It was good to find out what I need to do if I choose not to go to law school.

I am looking forward to this weekend which is another big weekend for Wittenberg Athletics.  The Women’s Soccer team is playing the #4 seeded Earlham in the NCAC championship game.  If they win, this will be four NCAC championships in a row.  Football is still undefeated, and last weekend our women’s cross country team took 2nd in conference, their best performance in history.  The Men’s Swim team defeated Wooster, as well, saddling them in nicely for the upcoming regular season.

With the leaves turning color, the campus is as beautiful as ever.  I encourage everyone to visit www.mascotfaceoff.com to support the Wittenberg Tigers!

Homecoming is Over!

Around this time last week I was anticipating Homecoming Weekend.  As a senior, this is a great time because I get to see the people who come back to WIttenberg from the three classes that graduated before me.  For the first time in my career at Wittenberg, I have been able to say that I was hanging out with 6 generations of Wittenbergers.  Whether these were people who were senior lacrosse players when I was a freshmen, or current freshmen, it was all bittersweet.

As I have said earlier, the real world is coming fast.  I took the LSAT, like I said, and the results didn’t come back as well as I pleased.  I will certainly be able to get into law schools, but I will not be getting into the higher echelon schools I chose.

For Student Senate we got to meet with the board of director’s for Wittenberg.  These are a great bunch of people, they are mostly all Wittenberg Graduates who have been very successful in life, whether that is business, academics, or doing very profound things in the world.  These people all take the time out of their busy days to make the decisions that help the University stay afloat.  At a macro-managing level, these people are crucial to carrying on the Witt Light.  It is always truly insightful to hear what they have to say, and the pride they have in this University.

Next week I will meet with the career center to find if I want to go to law school, or pursue other business options.  I will let you know how that goes next week as I embark on my future.

Fall Break

Hello Everyone!

Last week was tough as far as midterms go.  I had two on Thursday, and became sick around that time as well.  There is nothing worse than studying when you are sick, and all you want to do is go to bed and wake up the next day.  Nonetheless, I toughed through it, took the midterms and fall break couldn’t have come at a more opportune time!

I got a great night’s sleep the last few nights, and it is good to back in Chicago.  I was excited to hear that yesterday our Men’s Football team defeated Wabash, our big conference rival who was ranked #9 in the Nation.  We were ranked in the 20’s, but this win not only advances us to the 6-0 mark, but solidifies the fact that we have a top notch team and will be doing some damage in the post season.  It will be fun to follow!

This coming week is homecoming, and I am looking forward to lots of alumnus coming back.  This is also the grand opening of Founders the bar that is in the basement of the student center.  Founders will be open three days a week with food and a full service bar and will contain a lot of programming to attract students who aren’t over the age of 21, or who want to have fun without drinking.  By being on Student Senate we get to do a soft opening with the Board of Directors, which will be very exciting.  Additionally, I got my LSAT score back and it went well.  It narrowed my options for schools, but I will certainly be able to attend law school. I will keep you posted in the week to come.

Great Week

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for not updating sooner.  Last Sunday for lacrosse we had a “play day” against Kenyon College.  We competed in two games, one with our upperclassmen vs. their upperclassmen, and another with our freshmen vs. their freshmen.  Score was not officially kept, but I am under the impression that we lost the upperclassman game by 1 and won the underclassman game by 2.  Since lacrosse is a Spring sport, we play “fall-ball” and are allowed 15 practices during a 5 week period, with one day of competition.  This was our one day of competition, and a great way to see how we will match up against a conference opponent.

Tuesday was our Senior Ettiquette Dinner.  This is a service provided by the university where you pay $20 and you get a nice meal at a hotel in town and they bring in a presenter who presents on dining ettiquette and customs.  This was a great opportunity to learn new things, and for many will be essential when having lunch job interviews.

The weather this week was pretty gloomy, and it rained a majority of the week.  Thursday was bad because it was cloudy all day, and once we began our three mile run for lacrosse, the skies opened up and it poured the entire time.  That was a great incentive to run faster and get out of the rain quicker!

Overall, I had no academic commitments which is especially rare when you are taking the highest level courses (300 level), to complete your major.  The Political Science Department brought in a great speaker on Friday for their colloquium series. He had held several different positions within the Israeli government, the last of which was Deputy Minister of Intelligence.  His speech was on Israel’s foreign policy, and the major issues facing that nation.

Yesterday marked my last ever lacrosse “fall-ball” practice.  So far senior year has been full of “lasts.”  My last first day of school, and now my last ever “fall-ball” practice was a significant milestone.  Every college lacrosse player at the Division 3 level like Wittenberg will have 60 fall ball practices, in their four year collegiate career, and I finally reached that landmark.

This coming week is midterm week followed by fall break.  I have two exams on Thursday and Student Senate Tuesday, so I plan on keeping you posted following that meeting with any new issues facing the campus!

Hello Everyone,

This is my first blog post, so please bear with me as I work through the technical aspects of this!

I’d like to introduce myself, my name is Ted Winders and I am a senior from the suburbs of Chicago (Western Springs).  I am a political science major with an economics minor and I am pursuing a career in law.  I am also a four year starter on the Wittenberg Men’s Lacrosse Team.  Off the field I am the Vice President of the Student Senate, our form of student government here at Witt, and am a member of the fraternity FIJI, or Phi Gamma Delta.
