Chicago and Fall Break

Haven’t posted in a long while, mostly because I’ve been way busy over the last two weekends.

Two Fridays ago, I hopped on a bus with my MUN club heading to Chicago. Besides the actual conference, which was slightly different from the ones in high school (more structured in some areas, less structured in others), we were able to mess around in downtown Chicago a lot. The conference was held in the Sheraton on the Chicago River, so it was at a prime location. Then when we had free time, part of my group was able to go to Pier W and the Shedd Aquarium, both of which were a lot of fun. In fact, at the Shedd we saw four girls, all probably ten or younger, doing the “Soulja Boy”…something I never thought I’d ever see but was just so funny at the time.

Eventually we had to come back though, and we got back to Witt that Tuesday morning…at which time I caught my ride and headed home for break. Now my Thanksgiving itself wasn’t all that great, but the ability to go home and see a lot of my old friends every night was just too much fun. In fact, Thanksgiving night at about 1 a.m. (which would have actually been Friday), we went to Denny’s and convinced my buddy to take the “Double Dog Dare.” That is where you eat an appetizer sampler, a lumberjack slam, a banana split, and a beverage in 30 minutes to get it all for free. Well it was roughly six hours after his Thanksgiving meal, so he didn’t come close to finishing. It was really nice to be home though.

Now I’m back on campus and getting ready for the home stretch. I have a few big papers to write and of course a final or two all within the next three weeks. It’s going to be rough.

From tp-ing to holding letters…

So while nothing big happened in my current classes last week, I did get to pick my classes for next semester. As a freshman, and picking classes in one of the last time slots, I was worried I wasn’t going to get any of my first picks. That was not a problem at all, as I literally got every one of them. Sociology of Deviance, Understanding Psych., Mysteries of Self & Soul, and English 101 (with a rumored fantastic professor)…they all sound so interesting, but I have a really good feeling I am going to be writing a ton of papers. Oh well.

Saturday was my father’s, my aunt’s, and my friend’s (from down the hall) birthdays. What are the odds, huh? Friday night we waited for my friend to leave and snuck in and TPed her entire side of the room. Her reaction in the morning was great and it was just a blast to do.

After that on Saturday I prepared for something big…the opportunity to win a Wii. Delta Tau Delta, a frat. here at Witt, was throwing this big charity event for Bleed Purple, which helps kids with cancer go to college. They had a bunch of people sign up for a contest to win a Wii - the contestants had to hold onto their giant greek letters made out of wood. Only five people showed up so I was feeling alright. We started around 11 a.m., and at 4 p.m. we were down to the final three. It was evident that the other two guys weren’t giving up anytime soon, so around 9:30 p.m. I dropped so I could help celebrate my friend’s birthday for real. I had planned on this from the beginning since I already have a Wii and the entry fee was purely for charity. Rumor is it ended around 6 a.m. after some rule technicalities and the same Billy Joel song being played for three hours straight.

So that was my weekend and now I prepare for my last week before break. I’m in Chicago this weekend for MUN and that gets me excused absences in all my Monday classes, so I come home midday on Tuesday. I’m so excited.

Halloween!

So, last Wednesday was Halloween which was pretty awesome.  Luckily I don’t have classes on Thursday so my bedtime is really late.  I went as a guy from one of the iPod commercials; I was wearing black shoes, black socks, black pants, black t-shirt, black hoodie, black gloves, black face-paint, black hairspray, and carried around a white iPod and white headphones.  Whenever anyone asked me what I was, I just started dancing very flamboyantly.  I didn’t make it to the costume contest where I was planning to go, but oh well, I still had a great time.

This weekend was kind of slow, but thats alright.  I am getting ready to go to Chicago the weekend before Thanksgiving for Model United Nations (MUN) which is pretty exciting.  I have a few papers to write and a whole bunch of research to do, but I love MUN.  MUN is where you go to a conference pretending to be the delegates from a designated country talking about certain topics, just like in the real United Nations.  It’s something I did all throughout high school and my senior year I got top honors, so I’m really excited to try it at the college level.

Anyway, not too much to talk about because of the weekend.  Hopefully more eventful things will happen this time around.  But ooh, the Olive Garden a few minutes away opens today!

Homecoming Weekend

Wow, what a weekend. Friday there were a whole bunch of alumni around the new dorm, giving away pizza and stuff. The Domino’s around the corner is superb…while the Papa John’s is like cardboard. Later, we went out to the Greene to see 30 Days of Night. The Greene is a really nice outdoor shopping mall about 20 minutes away with a really nice theatre. 30 Days of Night is this new vampire movie…and it’s absolutely terrible. Oh well though, it was no biggie, I did find out that the theatre is another place I can add to my list of places to go with discounts for being a Witt student.

Saturday was…interesting. After a busy day at work, I ran over to the big Homecoming football game. When looking for my friends to sit down, WesBanco, which is a local bank, flagged me down and had me sign up for a free raffle. Why not, right? After the first quarter my name was called. Unbelievable. At halftime I got to go in the cash machine and won $26, which is $26 I didn’t come there with. Later I met some friends and coworkers at Applebee’s and then I stayed in that night after the Tribe lost, I couldn’t handle it.

I don’t even know where to start for Sunday…I spent 5 hours in the library studying for my math and philosophy exams that I had the next day, poor planning on my part, I know. I watched the Tribe play…which I don’t want to talk about…but then pulled an all-nighter for the exams. Note to all: never, ever, mix NoDoz and Monster. One or the other…never both. I did feel really good about both my exams after taking them, but now that I said that I know it’s going to be worse than I hope. I also got another exam back, which I got an A on after the curve from a B+, which is another good thing.

So overall, good weekend. Well, the Indian’s loss overruled that into terrible. Oh well, there’s always next year, I am from Believeland.

Fall Break

Let me tell you a little about myself.  I am a freshman tiger here at Witt, living in the New Dorm, I grew up about 20 minutes west of Cleveland going to a private prep school called Lake Ridge Academy, and I am an avid gamer.

So this last weekend was fall break, which means 4 days of intellectual freedom.  It was a nice chance to get back home.  I stopped in at my old friend’s surprise b-day party as soon as I got in.  I felt so old and out of place being the only college kid amongst a bunch of high schoolers.  I think I got asked “how’s college?” by every single person there, to which I responded “I love it.”  I don’t think it was ’til I went into the school on Monday that I realized how much better college is.  Sure the work load is more, but you have so much more time to do it.  The freedom is nasty insane too.  But enough about that.  Importantly, I got the free load of laundry done and a good chunk of time to truly enjoy Xbox Live.  Unfortunately now though, I procrastinated all my math homework.  So, I guess I’ll come back to this later…
